This year’s summer solstice(June 20) was unique in that a full moon (in this case the “Strawberry Moon”) and solstice occurred on the same day. This is something that hasn’t happened since 1967 and won’t again until 2062.
My friend James talked me into making the trek up the City (San Francisco) where we decided that shooting the moonrise from the Marin Headlands looked promising. After a few of hours of watching the fog dance just below the top of the Berkeley Hills (we've been shut out by too much fog before), sunlight shafting across the bay and brilliantly lit clouds over the bay at sunset, our patience was rewarded.
Here I chose to start out with a tight composition as the moon started to peek out over the Berkeley Hills behind San Francisco.
