Lower Yosemite Falls Moonbow, Yosemite Nat. Park

Posted by
Mike Hall (California, United States) on 21 June 2011 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

After shooting the lunar rainbow or moonbow from across the valley floor (see my prior post), we hustled over to the viewing platform to shoot from the base of the falls. With so much water flowing over the falls, we were greeted with a cold, gusty, wet breeze. The wind was gusting so much I took the garbage bag covering my camera and tripod off to get rid of the vibration that it created. After spending a little over 20 minutes working the location and getting soaked, we called it an evening. How wet did I get ?... Well we left the park about 12 am and my pants were still wet by the time I got home after a 4 hour car ride and it took a couple of days for my tripod to dry out !

Thanks for visiting my photoblog. Though I may not be able to respond to every comment, I do read them all and I appreciate your interest.

Man, what a story! I guess it is easy for me to forget that pros and other experts go through the same thing that old dumb dogs like me do...getting wet, having stuff go wrong, flap around, shake, rock, topple....The difference is you still come away with magnificent this one. After reading your story it really is impressive to view this image which is so fantastic and think that you went through all of that....the image gives the impreassion that all was well at the point of capture ;-) This is so fantastic, Mike...I think I like this one, overall, more than the others primarily because of the closer feel, the additional level of falls, the closer rainbow, and most of all, the perspective. I really get the feeling of looking straight up, almost, at the falls. This is just magnificent, Mike and thank you for going through all of that....I am sorry that you had to ;-) Next time I have wind toppling my cheapo tripod and water spraying, I won't use that as an excuse...or at least I'll try not to ;-) Thanks very much for this piece, Mike - it's wonderful!

Well from here it all looks like it was worth it! (easy for me to say-warm and dry here looking at it!) I love the way the rainbow balances the starry sky, and that wonderful, powerful water ties them together! This one is pure magic!

Very cool - see you caught part of the double! Too bad that one didn't complete but I'm not complaining. Well worth the effort and wet clothes - glad you got it!
